Steps
- Remove the wheel
Loosen the lug nuts, then raise and support the car and pull the wheel.
- Separate the outer tie rod from the knuckle
Soak the jam nut and tie rod nut in penetrant, loosen the jam nut with a 24mm wrench, remove the 21mm nut, strike the spindle with a hammer to break the stud loose, then unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner one, counting the turns, and lock the inner tie rod with pliers while marking and counting the turns to remove the jam nut too.
- Remove the old boot
Cut off its two clamps with side cutters and pull the boot off the inner tie rod.
- Fit the new boot
Slide it onto the tie rod, clamp the steering-rack side first and tighten it, then pinch the wheel-side clamp shut with pliers and tighten that one too.
- Reinstall the outer tie rod
Thread the new jam nut and outer tie rod back on using the same turn counts recorded earlier, seat the stud in the spindle, torque the 22mm nut to about 63 ft-lb, tighten the jam nut against it, then grease the tie rod fitting until the new boot swells slightly.
- Reinstall the wheel
Torque the lug nuts to about 110 ft-lb.
