Replace the ignition coils on a 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner, including the extra obstructions on the driver side.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- Socket extensions
- 5/8 inch spark plug socket
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- Torque wrench
- Dielectric grease
Parts and supplies
- Ignition coils
Steps
- Access and remove the passenger-side coils
Remove the two 10mm engine cover nuts and set the cover aside, unlatch and remove the air box cover, then on each coil unplug its connector, remove its 10mm hold-down bolt, and pull it straight up out of the spark plug well.
- Install the passenger-side coils and button up the air box
Coat each new coil's boot and connector with dielectric grease before seating it in the well, secure it with its 10mm bolt, reconnect the connector, then latch the air box cover back on.
- Work through the driver-side coils
Move aside the hoses and the two-bolt support bar that block access to the rear spark plugs, repeat the same removal and installation steps on each coil, then reinstall the support bar and hoses and refit the engine cover.
