Difficulty: Intermediate · About 40 min · Ford Explorer
Replace the serpentine belt tensioner, including its pulley, on a 1993-2000 Ford Explorer.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- 13mm wrench
- Flat blade screwdriver
- 8mm wrench
- 3/8 inch drive ratchet
Parts and supplies
- Serpentine belt tensioner
- Serpentine belt
Steps
- Disconnect the battery and note the belt routing
Find the belt routing diagram near the radiator before touching anything, then disconnect the negative battery terminal with an 8mm wrench.
- Move the intake hose aside
Loosen its clamps, unclip the air filter box cover, and tuck both out of the way.
- Remove the serpentine belt
Use a 3/8 inch drive ratchet handle on the tensioner to push it down and relieve tension, then slip the belt off.
- Swap the tensioner
Unbolt the old tensioner with a 13mm wrench, bolt the new one on in its place, and tighten it firmly.
- Inspect and reinstall the belt
Check the old belt for cracks or fraying before reusing it, then follow the routing diagram while using the 13mm wrench on the tensioner to walk the belt back over every pulley.
- Reconnect the battery
Give every pulley one more look, reattach the intake hose, then reconnect the negative battery terminal.
