Steps
- Remove the wheel
Loosen the 21mm lug nuts with the car on the ground, then raise and support it and pull the wheel.
- Break the hub nut loose
Straighten and remove the cotter pin, wedge a 16mm wrench against the caliper and clamp it with two lug nuts for leverage, break the 32mm axle nut loose, then tap a punch into the axle's center to loosen its splines.
- Remove the old axle
Unbolt the 19mm caliper bolts and secure the caliper aside with a bungee cord, remove the rotor, free the ABS wire from its bracket, remove the strut plate's bolts and the CV axle's lock plate, then knock the axle's inner bearing loose with a bar and hammer and pull the axle out.
- Install the new axle
Seat it into the differential, tap the joint in with a rubber mallet, refit the lock plate without over-tightening its bolts, push the splines into the hub, thread the axle nut on by hand, reseat the spindle in the strut and torque its bolts, then refit the ABS sensor.
- Reinstall the rotor and axle nut
Refit the rotor and caliper, torque the 32mm axle nut using the same wrench-and-lug-nut leverage trick, fit a new cotter pin, then tighten the ABS sensor's bolt.
- Reinstall the wheel
Torque the lug nuts to about 80 ft-lb in a crossing pattern.
- Top off the transmission fluid if any was lost
Depress the dipstick's tab to remove it, then feed fluid in through a funnel until the level is correct with the engine running in park at operating temperature.
Check your vehicle’s repair manual for exact specifications and fit.
