Difficulty: Beginner · About 30 min · Ford Expedition
Replace the serpentine belt on a 1997-2003 Ford Expedition.
Tools you will need
- 1/2 inch ratchet
- 8mm socket
- 5/16 inch wrench
Parts and supplies
- Serpentine belt
Steps
- Remove the old belt
Disconnect the negative battery cable, fit a 1/4 inch ratchet bar into the tensioner with a wrench for leverage, slacken it, pull the belt off the alternator, then remove it entirely.
- Install the new belt
Using the routing diagram, feed a loop down around the A/C compressor, another around the crank, then around the power steering pump, lift it over the water pump, use the ratchet to slacken the tensioner and pull the belt over the alternator, then release the tensioner, reconnect the battery, and start the engine to confirm it sounds right.
Check your vehicle’s repair manual for exact specifications and fit.
