Replace front brake pads and rotors on the V6 3.6L Chevrolet Camaro demonstrated in the video. It shows a 2011 car; verify the brake package, replacement fasteners and torque specifications for your exact vehicle before starting.
Tools you will need
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- 22mm socket
- 14mm socket
- 18mm socket
- T30 Torx bit
- Ratchet
- Torque wrench
- Bungee cord
- Wire brush
- Brake parts cleaner
- Brake grease
- Piston compression pliers
Parts and supplies
- Front brake pads
- Front brake rotors
- Caliper guide bolts
- Caliper bracket bolts
Steps
- Raise and secure the front of the car
Loosen the lug nuts with the car on the ground. Lift at the specified jack point, support it securely on jack stands and remove the wheel.
- Remove the caliper and rotor
Remove the rotor retaining screw, then the caliper slide bolts. Hang the caliper so its hose carries no weight. Remove the bracket bolts and bracket, then lift off the rotor and old pads. Keep the used fasteners separate from the replacements.
- Clean and inspect the bracket
Remove the pad shims and brush rust from the bracket and hub. Clean and lightly lubricate the pad contact points and guide pins as shown. Replace damaged or badly corroded pins and keep grease off pad and rotor friction surfaces.
- Fit the rotor and bracket
Clean the protective coating from both rotor faces with brake cleaner, seat the rotor and refit its retaining screw. Refit the bracket with new bolts and torque them to the specification for the exact brake package.
- Install pads and caliper
Seat the new pads in their shims. Apply a thin film of brake grease to the pad backs only, compress the piston slowly and reinstall the caliper with new guide bolts. Torque the bolts to the correct specification.
- Refit the wheel and check the brakes
Start lug nuts by hand, lower the vehicle and torque them in a crossing pattern to the vehicle specification. Before moving, pump the brake pedal until firm and check brake fluid level and for leaks. Follow the pad maker's bedding instructions.
Check your vehicle’s repair manual for exact specifications and fit.
