Steps
- Remove the wheel
Loosen the 19mm lug nuts with the car on the ground, then raise and support it and pull the wheel.
- Break the axle nut loose
Tap a punch into its dimple to free it, then with an assistant holding the brake pedal, break the 32mm axle nut loose with a breaker bar, raise the car back up, and thread the nut back on a few turns.
- Remove the old axle
Remove the control arm's 17mm bolts and pry the lower ball joint free, tap the end of the axle with a hammer, pull it from the knuckle, then with a drain pan ready, pry it out of the transmission.
- Install the new axle
Seat the shaft in the transmission, tap it fully in with a dead blow hammer, insert the other end into the knuckle, hand-tighten the axle nut, seat the ball joint in the knuckle, then tighten the control arm's 17mm bolts to about 43 ft-lb.
- Reinstall the wheel
Torque the lug nuts to about 80 ft-lb in a crossing pattern, then torque the axle nut to about 134 ft-lb and refit the center cap.
