How to Replace Alternator 01-02 GMC Sierra 2500 HD

Replace the alternator on a 2001-2002 GMC Sierra 2500 HD.
Tools you will need
- Flat blade screwdriver
- 15mm socket
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet

Steps
- Disconnect the battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench.
- Move the intake tube aside
Pry it loose with a screwdriver and disconnect it, unclip the radiator hose to move it out of the way, then remove the plastic covering with a socket and ratchet.
- Remove the old alternator
Unplug its wiring harness, remove the 10mm lead nut, use a 15mm socket on the tensioner to release belt tension and remove the belt, then unbolt the two 15mm mounting bolts and pry the alternator out.
- Install the new alternator
Seat it with a rubber mallet, plug in the wiring harness and bolt in the lead, bolt the alternator in with the 15mm socket, refit the serpentine belt with the 15mm socket on the tensioner, bolt the plastic cover back on, refit the intake tube and clip the radiator hose back, then reconnect the battery.
