Steps
- Loosen the lug covers and hub cap
Pop the plastic lug nut covers and hub cap loose, then loosen the lug nuts with the truck on the ground.
- Remove the wheel and pry off the dust cap
Raise and support the truck, remove the lug nuts and wheel, then pry off the center dust cap with a hammer and screwdriver.
- Remove the center hub nut
Refit the wheel and lower the truck just enough to break the center hub nut loose with a socket and breaker bar, then raise and support it again.
- Remove the old axle
Strike the axle with a hammer to free it from the hub, unbolt it with a socket and extension while holding the hub still with a bar, remove the stabilizer link with a 9/16 inch wrench for clearance, then pull the axle out.
- Install the new axle
Fit the new axle and torque its bolts to about 60 ft-lb, reinstall the stabilizer link, thread the washer and hub nut on without over-tightening, refit the wheel and lower the truck, then torque the hub nut to about 155 ft-lb and the lug nuts to about 120 ft-lb before refitting the dust shield, hub cap and lug covers.
