How To Replace Headlights 04-06 Hyundai Elantra
Difficulty: Intermediate · About 45 min · Hyundai Elantra
Replace headlight bulbs, the full headlight assembly, or aim the beam on a 2004-2006 Hyundai Elantra.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- Socket extensions
- 10mm socket
- Phillips head screwdriver
Parts and supplies
- Turn signal bulb
- Headlight bulb
- Daytime running light bulb
- Headlight assembly
Steps
- Swap the turn signal, daytime running and headlight bulbs
For the turn signal, twist its socket up and out, push the bulb down and twist to remove it, then reverse to install the new one. For the headlight, pull off the cap and connector, push the retaining clip down and off, pull the bulb out, fit the new one with its notch at the top, then refit the clip, harness and cap. The daytime running light bulb next to it just twists out and pulls straight free.
- Remove and install the full headlight assembly
Remove the two 10mm bolts at the top and a third one behind the headlight (an extension helps reach it), disconnect the two rear connectors by pressing their tabs, pull the grille side of the headlight and work the assembly free, then insert the new one from the outside first, refit the three bolts, and reconnect the connectors.
- Aim the headlights
Use a screwdriver on the rear adjustment screw (clockwise raises the beam), aiming it at a wall 20 feet away so the light concentrates about an inch below the bulb's height.
- Remove the driver's side splash shield for access
Twist the center of its retaining clip with a Phillips screwdriver and pull it out, then remove the 10mm bolt at the top of the shield and take it off to reach that side's headlight or bulb.
