How to Check Engine Fluids 04-09 Subaru Outback
Difficulty: Beginner · About 20 min · Subaru Outback
Check all seven fluid levels - brake, engine oil, washer, coolant, power steering, transmission and front differential - on a 2004-2009 Subaru Outback.
Tools you will need
- Flashlight
- Shop towel
Parts and supplies
- Engine oil
- Coolant
- Brake fluid
- Power steering fluid
- Automatic transmission fluid
- Front differential fluid
- Washer fluid
Steps
- Check the brake fluid
Twist off the reservoir cap and, using a flashlight if needed, confirm the fluid sits between the min and max lines and looks clear to light amber. Dark or murky fluid should be drained and replaced rather than just topped off.
- Check the engine oil
Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with a towel, reinsert it fully, then pull it again to read the level between the low and full marks, adding oil through the filler cap only if it reads low.
- Check the washer fluid
Pop the washer reservoir cap and confirm the fluid sits above the MIN mark, topping off if needed.
- Check the coolant
With the engine cold, check the coolant reservoir level with a flashlight. Only remove the radiator cap once the engine is fully cool, and confirm the radiator itself is filled to the neck.
- Check the power steering fluid
Remove the cap and check the level against the markings with a flashlight. Fluid that smells burnt or looks dark or murky should be drained and refilled rather than topped up.
- Check the automatic transmission fluid
Bring the car up to normal operating temperature, shut it off, then pull, wipe, reinsert and pull the dipstick again to read the level between the low and full marks.
- Check the front differential fluid
Pull the yellow-handled differential dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then pull it again to confirm the level sits between the low and full marks.
