How to Replace Heater Blower Motor with Fan Cage 95-97 Ford Ranger
Difficulty: Intermediate · About 60 min · Ford Ranger
Replace a failing heater blower motor, including transferring the fan cage, on a 1995-1997 Ford Ranger.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- Socket extensions
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 11mm socket
- Penetrating oil
Parts and supplies
- Heater blower motor
Steps
- Confirm the blower motor is actually at fault
Run the fan through all speeds and listen for grinding, squealing or silence before disassembling anything, to make sure the motor itself (and not a resistor or switch) is the problem.
- Move the radiator and washer bottle aside
Soak the two 11mm studs in penetrating oil, then remove the two 11mm and two 10mm fasteners holding the radiator support and washer fluid bottle, and swing them aside for access to the blower housing.
- Unplug and remove the old motor
Disconnect the blower wiring harness and pull the defrost hose and its collar free, then loosen the four 8mm case bolts by hand near the end of removal so none drop into the engine bay, working the motor out past the surrounding wiring.
- Move the fan wheel to the new motor
Slide the retainer and fan wheel off the old motor's shaft, then press them onto the new motor's shaft before installing it.
- Install the new blower motor
Seat the new motor with its flat side down, start all four 8mm case bolts by hand before tightening them, then reconnect the defrost hose and its collar.
- Reinstall the radiator and washer bottle
Set the radiator support and washer fluid bottle back against the fender and reinstall the two 10mm and two 11mm fasteners.
