How to Replace Headlight 98-05 Volkswagen Beetle

Replace headlight bulbs or the full headlight assembly on a 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle.

Steps

1. Release the headlight assembly

   Flip up the metal latch, press the checkered button and lift the latch, then slowly work the fixture forward and out of the car.

2. Service the bulbs

   Unplug the harness, twist the low-beam socket counterclockwise and swap its bulb, then for the upper bulb pull its wire retainer up, disconnect the bulb by its green wire, swap it, and push the retainer back down to lock it in before snapping the back cover shut.

3. Reinstall the assembly

   Make sure the latch mechanism still slides freely, adding a little grease if not, reconnect the harness, line up the mounting holes, then push the assembly in with the latch down and hook the latch over the back of the housing to lock it.
