Replace a headlight bulb, or the full headlight assembly, on a 1993-1999 Volkswagen Jetta.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- Socket extensions
- Flat blade screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 10mm wrench
Parts and supplies
- Headlight bulb
- Headlight assembly
Steps
- Prop the hood
Pop the hood release hook aside and secure the hood with its prop rod.
- Swap just a bulb if needed
Reach behind the headlight, disconnect its wire, twist the retaining ring counterclockwise, then pull the bulb out and reverse the steps with the new one.
- Remove the grille for a full headlight swap
Disconnect the headlight, remove the four Phillips screws along the top of the grille, release its hidden clips with a screwdriver from both above and below, then release the felt tab from inside the hood near the headlight on each side.
- Unbolt the old headlight
Remove its four 8mm bolts, saving the top one for last, then work the housing free of its mounting clip underneath.
- Install the new headlight
Aim it with a 10mm wrench on the adjustment bolts before fitting, seat the top edge first and then the bottom, start all four bolts a couple of turns before fully tightening any one, snug them firm without over-tightening, then reconnect the harness.
- Reinstall the grille
Hook the bottom clips in first, carefully pry the top ones into place, do the same on the sides, then refit the four Phillips screws without overtightening so the mounting tabs don't break.
