Difficulty: Intermediate · About 45 min · Ford Ranger
Replace the radiator fan shroud on a 1998-2012 Ford Ranger.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- Socket extensions
- Flat blade screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- 7mm socket
- 10mm wrench
- 3/8 inch drive ratchet
- Adjustable wrench
Parts and supplies
- Radiator fan shroud
Steps
- Move the intake tube out of the way
Remove the throttle body cover's Phillips screws and single 7mm bolt, loosen the intake hose's two clamps, then pull the tube free.
- Remove the old fan and shroud
Remove the 36mm fan clutch nut (tensioning the belt with a 3/8 inch drive ratchet on the tensioner helps hold the pulley still if you lack a clutch wrench), remove the water pump pulley's two 10mm bolts and the shroud's two top 10mm bolts, then lift the fan and shroud out together.
- Install the new shroud and fan
Set it into place, thread the 36mm clutch nut on a couple of turns by hand, refit the shroud's top 10mm bolts, then tension the belt again to hold the pulley while fully tightening the clutch nut and the water pump pulley bolts.
- Reinstall the intake tube
Fit it back in, tighten its hose clamps, reconnect the breather hose, then refit the throttle body cover and its screws and bolt.
Check your vehicle’s repair manual for exact specifications and fit.
