How To Replace Engine Serpentine Belt Ford 92-96 F-150/F250
Difficulty: Easy · About 20 min · Ford F-150
Take off and refit the serpentine belt on a 1992–1996 F-150/F-250 with the 5.0L, 5.7L or 5.8L V8. All it needs is a 15mm socket and ratchet to release the tensioner. Shown on a 1996 F-150 5.0L.
Tools you will need
- 15mm socket
- Ratchet
- 15mm wrench
Parts and supplies
- Serpentine belt
Steps
- Check the belt routing diagram
Make sure the belt diagram on the truck is intact before you start. It shows how the new belt goes back on.
- Release the tensioner and slip the belt off
Put the 15mm socket and ratchet on the tensioner bolt and pull counterclockwise to loosen the belt. Slip it off the tensioner pulley, let the tensioner back slowly, then pull the belt up off the crank pulley and out.
- Start the new belt on the crankshaft pulley
Feed a loop of the new belt down onto the crankshaft pulley first, then work it around the air pump, power steering pump and A/C pulley.
- Route it over the remaining pulleys
Take it up around the A/C pulley, then the tensioner and alternator. Keep the belt off the idler pulley at this stage.
- Put the belt on the tensioner
Take tension off with the wrench and get the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Check it sits correctly on the A/C, power steering, water pump and crank pulleys.
- Finish and release the tensioner
Pull the tensioner back, slide the belt underneath the idler pulley, then let the tensioner off slowly.
