Steps
- Remove the wheel
Loosen the lug nuts with a 19mm socket, then raise and support the car and pull the wheel.
- Remove the brakes
See a brake-specific guide for full detail on pulling the caliper and bracket out of the way.
- Move the strut aside
Soak the top three nuts and bottom two bolts in penetrating oil, loosen or remove two of the top 13mm nuts, disconnect the stabilizer link with a 17mm socket and hex wrench, unclip the ABS cable, then remove the 18mm lower bolts and swing the strut to the side.
- Replace the axle
Drive the old axle out with a hammer and socket extension, unbolt it from the transmission with a 12mm socket, pull it out, then bolt the new axle into the transmission and torque its cap bolts to about 35 ft-lb, work it into the hub, refit the strut and torque its 18mm bolts to about 55-60 ft-lb, then tighten the top three nuts to about 20-22 ft-lb.
- Reassemble the stabilizer link and brakes
Tighten the stabilizer link back together, clip the ABS cable back onto the strut, then reassemble the caliper and bracket.
- Reinstall the wheel
Hand-tighten the lug nuts, lower the car, then torque them to about 100 ft-lb in a star pattern, checking your owner's manual for the correct hub nut or bolt torque too.
Check your vehicle’s repair manual for exact specifications and fit.
