How To Replace Serpentine Belt Tensioner Ford 92-96 F-150/250/350
Difficulty: Intermediate · About 40 min · Ford F-150
Replace the serpentine belt tensioner on a 1992-1996 Ford F-150, F-250 or F-350.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- 15mm socket
- T50 Torx socket
Parts and supplies
- Serpentine belt tensioner
- Serpentine belt
Steps
- Remove the serpentine belt
Fit a 15mm socket and ratchet to the tensioner arm, rotate it counterclockwise to slacken the belt, then walk the belt off the idler pulley and out of the engine.
- Unbolt the old tensioner
Remove its single T50 Torx bolt and pull the tensioner off.
- Install the new tensioner
Slide the new unit into place, fitting its tab between the spring and tensioner body, then reinstall the T50 bolt.
- Reinstall the belt
Following the under-hood routing diagram, loop the belt around the crank, air pump, power steering, A/C and alternator pulleys, then use the 15mm socket on the tensioner to slacken it just enough to walk the belt onto the idler pulley, and double-check the routing before releasing the tensioner.
