How to Replace Ignition Starter Switch 02-06 GMC Envoy XL SUV
Difficulty: Advanced · About 75 min · Gmc Envoy
Replace the ignition starter switch, which sits behind the steering column trim, on a 2002-2006 GMC Envoy XL.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- 8mm socket
- 7mm socket
- E5 socket
- T25 Torx driver
- Flat blade screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
Parts and supplies
- Ignition starter switch
Steps
- Disconnect the battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm socket before working near the steering column wiring.
- Strip down the dash and steering column trim
Remove the panel below the dash (two 7mm bolts) and the lower dash panel behind it (four 7mm bolts), pry the tilt lever out of the wheel, remove the instrument panel trim's four Phillips screws (lowering the wheel partway to reach the lower pair), then pull the trim free.
- Remove the old ignition switch
Take out the two T25 bolts on the lower steering column panel and pry it off, raise the wheel to reach the upper panel's E5 security screw, remove that panel too, then unclip the switch's wiring from the column, lower the switch out and disconnect its harness.
- Install the new switch
With the lock cylinder's button pressed and turned fully back, rotate the new switch fully back so its gear tooth lines up with the switch box, connect the wiring harness, push the switch into place and clip its wiring to the column.
- Test it, then reinstall the trim
Reconnect the battery and cycle through every ignition position to confirm it works correctly, disconnect the battery again, then reverse the earlier steps to refit the steering column panels, instrument trim and both dash panels before reconnecting the battery for good.
