Difficulty: Intermediate · About 45 min · Toyota Avalon
Replace a headlight bulb, the full assembly, or aim the beam on a 1998-1999 Toyota Avalon.
Tools you will need
- Ratchet
- Phillips head screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- Socket extensions
Parts and supplies
- Headlight bulb
- Headlight assembly
Steps
- Swap just a bulb if needed
Twist its socket counterclockwise and pull it out, releasing the harness by pressing its tabs.
- Remove the old headlight assembly
Remove the Phillips screw atop the side light, twist out its socket and disconnect the other harness, remove the grille screw nearest that light and its center clip, then remove the headlight's three 10mm bolts and one 10mm nut, pull it free, and disconnect its harnesses.
- Install the new assembly
Reconnect the harnesses, line the headlight up with the body and push it in, refit the three bolts and nut, replace the grille screw and center clip, then reconnect and refit the side light with its Phillips screw.
- Aim the headlights
Park 20 feet from a wall, use the outer adjuster screw for up/down (counterclockwise raises it) and the inner one for left/right, aiming the low beam about an inch below the bulb's height and the high beam level with it.
